San Diego Music Awards

Here's a little story for you...

I was standing with Jordan Mancino (drums) and Tim Lambesis (vocals) of local-gone-big metal band, As I Lay Dying last night. They were both ready to go home, and not feeling like they fit in with the crowd at the San Diego Music Awards. They were nominated for the nights biggest honor, Artist Of The Year (along with Switchfoot, Nickel Creek, and other big San Diego names. As their award was being announced, Jordan left to use the restroom. I asked Tim if he was ready to win, and he replied, "We're not going to win..." then he left to use the restroom. He came back after noticing that the line was too long. I said, "Good, because you have to go make a speech now." and he just laughed. The announcer said, "The award for artist of the year goes to.....As I Lay Dying! I know those metal boys are in the crowd somewhere!" Just then, Tim looks over at me and says, "Wow, this is awkward. I didn't expect that..." and he just walked away to the stage in disbelief.

My point being...these guys deserved the award. Fresh off of Ozzfest (with Ozzy Osbourne, Rob Zombie, Iron Maiden, etc.) they are taking a 2 week break before heading off to Germany, and another non-stop touring year. Their metal-blade release "Shadows Are Security" debuted at #34 on the Billboard 200! And through all of their fame, and touring, and everything else, they still remain Christ-like examples. Their music still reflects their lives and how they are living for a God who is bigger than all of the grime, and the crap. Even though you can't always understand what is being screamed, As I Lay Dying still finds a way to reach the listeners. Through song, interviews, meet and greets. Definitely deserving of San Diego's Artist Of The Year.
