SignOnSanDiego.com > San Diego Padres -- Padres trump an ace - I drew the spotlight to Jake Peavy a few months ago and now maybe people outside of San Diego will know why. He outpitched Roger Clemens and pitched a complete game shutout. They way he closed the game was fantastic as he seemed to save his best for last.
Posted by Tim at August 24, 2005 06:15 AMOk, you right, Peavy has been doing well. I heard the Baseball Tonight guys speaking on him a few weeks ago.
But for real, Roger Clemens is absolutely insane good. He just gets no run support. I think he has given up 5 runs on the road ALL YEAR.
Clemens is the best pitcher in my opinion of all time. I know Cy Young is waaaaay ahead of everyone in wins, but he pitched in the dead-ball era: that makes a big difference.
As far as I'm concerned Clemens should win the Cy Young this year over Carpenter: ERA is everything.
Posted by: the daily missive at August 24, 2005 09:59 AMI do put Clemens in the top 5 all-time for sure. One of the things where the modern guys fall short is this is the era of the 6-7 inning pitcher. I look at ERA for sure but also complete games, wins and Ks. In 2001 when Clemens won 20 games and the CY award he had zero complete games and he didn't complete any last year (Big Unit should have won in 2004). Carpenter has 6 CG and 4 shutouts. That's pretty impressive.
Posted by: Broken Masterpieces at August 24, 2005 10:33 AMI think you have a good point with CG's, I haven't thought about that as much as I should. I would say, however, that while wins are obviously important, what is one to do when he gets no run support?
I think Clemens would have nearly 20 wins this year with even modest run support.
Another thing the older guys did "back-in-the-day" is pitch like 3 games a week. That's just crazy, and guys today just can't do that.
