the smiths. they're the best. they were not the best known, probably because they signed on an independent label and therefore didn't sell a shitload of copies around the world. but some of the other choices are frankly embarrassing. u2 are big, but big isn't clever, and nor is it good. metallica are simply awful, nirvana were good, but, are now extremely commercially viable directly because the lead singer killed himself. which is disgusting. i would say no to the others too, except maybe the beatles, what about radiohead?

Metallica for One which i believe is one of the most underrated rock songs of all time. AC/DC cause they lived what they played and they were awesome. Iron Maiden for just being legends. Black sabbath, not quite as good as iron maiden but still good. Rush for also being legends. Queen for being legends. Newer bands: Tool, Rage against the machine, smashing pumpkins (for writing some of the best love songs/tales u will ever hear). And a hell of a lot of other bands.

Some people dont understand this new generations music habits. we dont listen to the beatles or the rolling stones. yes we listen to harder rock.

From my experiences theres a lot of great older music: Queen (for one) - they were awesome. The Beatles weren't bad. Metallica - at one stage the biggest band in the entire world, and thats saying a LOT for a heavy metal band. Bands like Metallica, Iron Maiden, Rush and Black Sabbath brought hard rock to the masses.

A lot of good comments, but the greatest band ever would have to be the Beatles. The greatest hard rock band is Led Zeppelin. Hands down. Page's guitar solos are ridiculous, Bonham's drums blow anyone outta the water, and Plant on vocals, incredible. Jimi Hendrix Experience were incredible as well as Pink Floyd. I like lynard Skynard a lot as well. That's my opinion. And please stop putting U2 at the top of these lists, as well as metallica and nirvana.

Hi, this is very difficult, and the list should vary according to exactly what that top ten lists should be. Is it heaviness? talent? Longevity? your personal favourite? originality? They will always differ. However the lists are going to be all different. What I loved as a teenager is different to what I listen to now, but I still love them all. The real judge has too be influence. What bands would take the biggest chunk of rock history with them if they were removed? The answer to this question is obvious. Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones.

Well you really, have to say Zeppelin. Because, just about every rock band that came after has said that Zeppeline was their biggest influence, including Metallica, GNR, Queen, Kiss, ACDC.

For me the best band has to be Queen. For many reasons. No body was as versatile as Queen. Their music compostion was very elaborate and not just based on 2 chords. Then the big thing about Queen, is that they succeeded to sell millions, even though they composed elaborate music...

Queen were simply superior when matched with others of the same era. Their music was over the top.. I think Beatles were the pioneers of Rock, but then it was Queen that perfectioned Rock up to highest heights ever reached..

The Greatest Rock band ever with out thinking is Led Zeppelin, In 1970 they sold more records than the Beatles-and still to this day remain the Greatest band ever to tour.

In my time I saw Jimi Hendrix Who was unbelievable, But by far Jimmy Page was a the master and still is the master with his guitar. I saw Led Zeppelin three times on tour in 74 at the Garden in NY "The Song Remains the Same", 1977 US Tour, and there last tour in America before John died. It will remain the Greatest Event of All Time.

Now second greatest Rock band I would have to say would be Guns N Roses-the reason being because of the short amount of time the band was together they broke more record sales and sold out to more concerts than any band in history.

I have to say Led Zeppelin. I mean they have Robert Plant who is an unforgettable lead singer, they have Jimmy Page who is the master of the guitar, John Bonham who is the greatest drummer ever as heavely regarded, and John Paul Jones who can play more than one instrument. Not only that....they sold 300 million records worldwide....that's just friggin' phenomenal. Many bands were heavely influenced by them.

My personal favorie is Guns N' Roses because they were only a 6 year rock band and they are already phenomenal. Slash is one of the greatest guitarists ever...'Sweet Child O' Mine' and 'November Rain' will go down to as one of the greatest guitar solos of all-time. If Guns N' Roses had stayed together...they would've been huge...I mean HUGE.

Metallica has a reason to be up there...they are one of the biggest influences in metal history also that they sold 200 million records worldwide. AC/DC definitely, and the other great influences.
