So when the Presidential nominee in 1988 nominated a personable and attractive Senator in 1988 it was roundly smacked around by the media elite. In 2004 where is the same criticism?
Posted by Tim at July 6, 2004 07:54 PMA personable and attractive Senator with minimal experience, it should be noted. Quayle actually got things done in the Senate, and won re-election to the Senate by a landslide 61%. Edwards doesn't have the deer-in-the-headlights look that Quayle had, though.
Posted by: Douglas at July 6, 2004 11:35 PMThe guy has more experience with national and international issues than Bush 43 did when he was elected.
Quayle is "personable and attractive"? I don't remember it like that. Whiny and lecturing. And he just seemed to suffer in comparison to Bush 41 as I remember it.
Plus, I gotta smile. When the RNC gets so worked up and nasty as it has been over the last 24 hours, it means they're worried.
Posted by: Tom at July 7, 2004 05:53 AMSo, by extension, any U. S. Senator would have more experience with national and international issues than a state governor, which would include Bill Clinton.
The RNCs job is to emphasize differences betwen the Republican and Democratic candidates, which they (and the DNC) do to great effect. I don't think the RNC was surprised and I don't think they're worried

Yes. So maybe a better question is what is the appropriate experience for a Vice President or a President?
If the RNC has problems with Edwards's experience and accomplishments, then with that logic they'd have recommended against electing Bush in 2000.
So we know the RNC is full of manure.

I agree. The DNC produces cow chips in quantity also. But be happy. At least you don't have Nader's manure stinking up your voting block.
You know, though, I was watching Senator Edwards on the news tonight, and his communication skills are something like that Reagan guy of yours (who lacked that national and international experience too).
Maybe there's nothing for the RNC to worry about, but then maybe there is.
Posted by: Tom at July 7, 2004 08:59 PMNo worries from us on the right. By nominating Edwards you pushed us into the briar patch.
Now we finally have a prominent figure to attach to the damage that trial lawyers have done to our medical care, businesses and freedoms.

I think you're right on (no pun intended). Edwards' nomination might trigger some of that debate. But think about this: Enron. That's the front page news today.
"Kenny-Boy" Lay (as our President Bush used to call him) was indicted.
How many people are sitting around this week bemoaning poor, poor Ken Lay..."Wow those cruel trial lawyers like that-there John Edwards guy are so mean to Enron execs! They're so cruel to Ken Lay's freedom and businesses!"
It's a simple twist of fate that the John-John Dem ticket was announced the same week that Kenny Boy got nailed. But we Dems will take it.
Joe Six-Pack looks at the week's headlines: "Hmmm, so guys like Edwards fight criminals like Ken Lay who was Bush's friend that ripped off so many people? Well this Reagan Democrat just went home to the Democrats..."
And then Joe sips another Budweiser, clicks his TV remote, and tunes to that old HBO movie "Erin Brockovich" with big brown-eyed, busty Julia Roberts helping a grungy, but heroic, trial lawyer who's helping common citizens fight corporate excess.
Posted by: Tom at July 8, 2004 01:54 PMI thought you liberals were screaming for Kenny Boy to be paraded around in handcuffs. Well, you got your wish. And I'll bet Bush doesn't pardon him.
