Transcendental Meditation in Public Schools?

Just saw something on CNN about students being taught TM in public schools in Detroit. What? This is religious! If this comes into our district then I'm asking for tax-payer money to teach a Bible study at schools. I don't have any problem with TM clubs or something but to have instructors brought in? Come on. Where's the ACLU or the separation of church and state folks?

What is worse is that the courts ruled in 1976 that TM is in fact Hindu, and threw it out of the schools!

There is a charter school just outside of Charlotte that is opening soon incorporating TM as part of their day. Many people are up in arms about this for the same reasons mentioned here. Bill, I'd be interested in some information about the legal history you mention from 1976.

Consider me interested in this information also. This is truly outragreous.

One of my profs at Denver Seminary, was an expert witness in the court case. His name is Dr. Gordon Lewis. You can reach him at gordonlewis@viawest.net. He can give the details. I believe the case was in New Jersey and the Supreme Court allowed the lower court ruling to stand. In talking to many TM trainers since then, they refused to admit the obvious: that this is Advaita Vedanta Hinduism, that the initiation ceremony (puja) is overtly ascribing all things in the universe to Guru Dev (Maharishi's own guru)
