What a trend we have in Jesus - 03/08/04
My first reaction to "Jesus is my Homeboy" was one of revulsion. The difference between the suffering servant and a pop culture icon is staggering. Thinking further, my hope is that people will see the pop culture Jesus and dig further. When you start further looking at Christ it is unavoidable to see that He's not just a friendly guy but a whole lot more.
Posted by Tim at March 8, 2004 06:33 AMIt is my understanding that "homeboy" has multiple connotations. For a girl, it means the boy you come to after you've visited other boys. It has a connotation of an associate in a gang. It means someone to whom you have a higher loyalty than the average person. A gang member might display sacrificial loyalty for his homeboy. So it might be more accurate to say that Christians are Jesus' homeboys and girls.

Posted by: Rob at March 13, 2004 07:41 AMI found these wonderful articles on Prayer, on Bible Study, and on Holiness by that great Anglican bishop of two centuries ago, John Charles Ryle, over at the http://www.torontochristianbooks.com site. Well, well worth reading!
Here's the linking quote from their index page:
"We also warmly recommend these superb writings, "Holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord." by John Charles Ryle, "Bible Reading" by John Charles Ryle, and "A Call To Prayer" by John Charles Ryle, to our readers. You'll find a selection of J.C. Ryle's books below them, on the same pages. They make for some of the most profitable, edifying, encouraging and uplifting Christian books available, and are classics which have stood the test of time!"
