The state should not be involved in sanctioning marriage whatsoever (position most recently advanced by the leader of Canada's [now defunct] Progressive Conservative Party).

If it insists upon sticking its nose in the marriage business, it should respect the provision for equal protection of the law for all citizens. It may be unpopular, as was allowing inter-racial marriages. But the Constitution was designed to protect the rights of the minority.

It's in the state's interest to protect traditional marriage. It's already bad enough with the ease of divorce that the state allows. I'd like to see it a little tougher to get married and not just an easy divorce. No fault divorce should not be allowed.
